Generation Y and Z Bloggers: Yes, They're Different!

Hi again! As I'm typing this, the Grammy Awards are happening! However, because of time zone difference, it doesn't air in my area until three hours after it starts (since Vancouver is three hours before Eastern Time). Anyway, me and my parents just went to a restaurant in Coal Harbour, and had our occasional "Generation X vs. Y vs. Z" conversation. So I decided to Google "millennials vs gen z infographic". This is what I found in Images:

Then, I decided to, based on this infographic alone, compare millennial (or Generation Y) bloggers and centennial (or Generation Z) bloggers. Let's get to the basics first. Millennials were born in the eighties and most of the nineties, so at least all of them are working. Most of their parents were born during the baby boom, making them an abundant generation. Centennials (my generation) are different; they were born in the late nineties and most of the 2000s, so most of them are still in school. Moreover, all of them were born when the internet was around. When it comes to their lifestyles, opinions, and the media, there's a big difference between these two close generations, as you can see from the above infographic. Break down:

1. Technology Usage

Millennials use two devices regularly, so as bloggers, they would have cleaner writing workspaces. As for Centennials, they use many devices at a time (so relatable, I'm typing this blog from my laptop while listening to radio, and my phone is near me), so they probably would be more distracted as bloggers.

2. Communication Method

Expect a blog post by a millennial to be text only, and a blog post by a centennial to have a bunch of images (like my earlier posts).

3. Work approach

Millennials are curators and sharers, so they are bosses of the blogging world. Centennials are creators and collaborators, so they're more of the open-minded type.

4. Time Focus

Blog posts by millennials are usually focused on current events (remember Neil Pasricha's blog? Yeah, he's technically a millennial). On the other hand, centennials want to talk about the future (as I have done with some of my posts).

5. Mindset

Millennials are optimists, meaning that they look at things positively. They would likely take a topic, and blog about all its pros. Yay! Nevertheless, centennials are realists, meaning that they look at things realistically. One thing I've discovered about myself is that I like to see both sides of a situation. That way, I can easily understand all perspectives of it, and not be biased. So why not do that as a centennial blogger? Address both sides. I kind of do that.

6. View on Success

All millennials want to do, when they're putting themselves out there, is get noticed by others. Doing this with blogging would mean blogging too frequently to increase SEO and hopefully have a celebrity mention them on Twitter. Centennials, on the contrary, like to keep it real, especially in their paths to success. Therefore, they would accept blogging as a journey itself, with many highs and lows (as I would).

7. Reliance

Millennials are known to easily work with others, so they most likely wouldn't blog alone. But centennials wouldn't, they are comfortable by themselves (so am I); consequently, they usually blog in an isolated environment (okay, maybe not that extremely, I blog in my bedroom, were my parents come and check on me).

8. Personality

Just like the demanding kind of children, millennials are entitled. They want to feel special, even as bloggers, as they want to show the world they've caught on with the latest trends. They feel like they are the centre of the universe. Centennials are more concentrated on themselves (surprisingly!) and are persistent. In short, they know what to work on, and work on it (walking the walk), which is no different then how I blog.

Don't forget! The next two parts of my series "Neil Pasricha: Author of Awesome" are coming, so stay tuned to my blog!
